A reimagined guardian
Honor of Kings (王者荣耀) is a mobile MOBA from Tencent's TiMi Studio, first released in China in 2015. Zhong Kui (钟馗) is a hero in the Chinese version of the game. Rather than a scholar who was wronged by the emperor, the game reimagines him as an enigmatic guardian figure tied to the city of Chang'an, the Tang capital. Chinese gaming coverage describes the redesign as much larger and more otherworldly than the classical portrait, with an emphasis on his authority over ghosts and the void.
Only the game's own hero page can tell you the current story text. The traditional version of the legend is told on this site in the origin of Zhong Kui.

Guides describe the hook as the center of his play: it pulls an enemy to Zhong Kui so that teammates can punish the target, so the role rewards accurate aim and good timing. Numbers, cooldowns and role tags can change with patches, so we do not quote them here.
Why this version matters
Zhong Kui has been redrawn for almost every medium he has moved through, from Tang court paintings to Ming and Qing novels to Japanese roof guardians (see Shōki: Zhong Kui in Japan). The Honor of Kings version is a modern example of the same process: the name and the role of protector remain, while the look and the lore change with the medium.
