What has been announced
Black Myth: Zhong Kui is a single-player action RPG from the Chinese studio Game Science and the second game in the Black Myth series after Black Myth: Wukong (2024). It is a standalone game with a new protagonist: where Wukong drew on Journey to the West, this game takes the demon queller Zhong Kui as its hero.
Game Science revealed it with a trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live on 19 August 2025 (20 August in China), keeping the studio's tradition of reporting progress to players every 20 August (Wikipedia). The studio has said the game is planned for PC and all mainstream console platforms. No release date has been announced.
What happened in 2026
- February 2026. Ahead of the Lunar New Year, Game Science published a six-minute live-action short. It was labeled non-canon and for entertainment only, and it did not show gameplay (TechNode, Gematsu).
- 20 August 2026. A 15-minute gameplay trailer arrived on the studio's yearly report date. It was captured from a work-in-progress build, the studio noted that the final game may differ, and coverage highlighted a sword-fighting style built around parrying and dodging (Wikipedia, Gematsu, RPG Site).
The legend behind the game
The studio has shared little about the plot, so treat any detailed story summary with caution. The character comes from the folk legend told on this site: a scholar of the Tang dynasty who becomes the demon queller who protects the living from ghosts.
